I’m writing to you because I’m concerned about our country’s finances and I’m asking for your help.
Today, we are yet again on the verge of a government shut-down. Congress has not been able to come up with a budget so our only alternative is to end services, send people home and stop paychecks.
Sadly, this has become common practice for the folks on capitol hill and is probably business as usual, but to myself and many other taxpayers and voters, this is our government holding us hostage in order to advance whatever particular cause is the hot topic of the day.
I consider myself a moderate and am not registered as democrat or republican. I can see both sides of most controversies and am typically a patient person, but my patience is wearing thin.
This morning I saw 2 headlines that caught my attention. The first was about the looming government shut-down. The second was about another round of student debt forgiveness.
Our national debt stands at over $36 trillion. That’s a number I can’t even fathom, but I can understand the $271,790 that belongs to myself and to every tax payer in the US. And thanks to usdebtclock.org, I can see the number rising by the second.
This is an overwhelming burden. The annual cost to service that debt is now greater than the total spending for defense.
We can’t afford our current spending. I can’t imagine congress has a plan to address bringing down the national debt seeing as congress cannot even come up with an agreeable stop-gap plan to keep basic services running.
And on top of this financial crisis, we’re forgiving more student loan debt. A nice thing to do, but can we afford it? Is this in the budget? It doesn’t seem like anyone in our government is asking this.
I think this election cycle has been a surprise for a lot of people. I don’t think government anticipated how angry people are. Inflation has been impactful. I think we all understand this is a global problem, but don’t tell us Bidenomics is working when we can’t afford to buy staples like eggs.
Immigration is a big issue, but don’t mistakenly think that the issue is about immigrants. It’s not. It’s about spending and where we, as a nation are choosing to spend our valuable resources.
Warren Buffet said he could solve the deficit in 5 minutes. “You just pass a law that says that any time there’s a deficit of more than three percent of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.”
I’m sure it is more challenging than many of us think, but, the voters are relying on you and your fellow congresspersons to solve this. Please try and put aside your differences and do what’s best for the American people.
