Everyone’s Right. And That’s a Problem

Just a quick one today, but it’s been on my mind with all the craziness in the news lately. I expect that many readers, like me, are frustrated with the stalemate in our country today.

We are well into the US Government shutdown with no end in sight.

Take any issue, and there is a clear political divide.

Immigration:

The left is absolutely right. It’s not right for ICE to storm into US cities and gather up suspects.

The right is absolutely correct (you thought I was gonna say right. Right?) that lax immigration policies have let some dangerous criminals in and have strained some of our city’s abilities to provide basic services.

Everyone’s right.

The problem is that if everyone is right, everyone on the other side is wrong. And the simple solution seems to be to eliminate the other side.

There is no use discussing, debating, or trying to persuade, we’re right and they’re wrong. On everything.

Wildfire

This one is in the news a bit lately. In January of this year, a huge wildfire raged in California. According to allsides:

Before we go further, let’s take a minute.

12 people died.

Never mind the homes destroyed, property lost and psychological toll, 12 people are no longer with us.

Seems to me, we should do something to try and prevent this from happening again.

Let’s Solve It

Luckily it’s not just me.

Others seem to be on the same page. We need to do something.

The left is vindicated. They’ve always known it was climate change.

From the NPR article below, the fingerprints of climate change are all over this.

And the right is vindicated. In the Daily Caller, we’ve clearly established that this was a person and had nothing to do with climate change.

Wrap Up

My head hurts.

Why can’t both be true?

A person set the fire.

The lack of rain and the heat and wind were a contributing factor in the rapid spread.

I played golf on Tuesday October 7, and it was 85 degrees. That’s unusual for October in New England.

Could that be climate change?

Today it’s freezing. In the low 40s and windy – more like October should be.

There’s no climate change.

With our short attention spans and constant need to be right, we really can’t allow for any grey area.

But there really are 2 sides to any issue. While we may feel strongly one way, there may be some nugget of truth on the other side of the argument.

Many of us seem to be too wrapped up in our side, and our conviction that we’re right, that we’re unlikely to solve any of this.
